Morris, IL Mario Clouser, Joe Liguori, Taylor Ferns & Nick Odell all extended their points leads with dominating feature wins on Saturday night in the 6th Annual UMARA Hot Rod Barn Carter Anderson Classic at the Grundy County Speedway in Morris.

Mario Clouser of Auburn, Illinois took the lead on lap one of the 36-lap UMARA National midget feature and survived several restarts to win his third UMARA feature of the season and his first in the Carter Anderson Classic. Reigning UMARA National midget champ Jimmy Anderson and rookie Grant Galloway added the only real excitement to the race once Clouser got the lead. Anderson started eighth and worked his way up to second, even passing two cars in one turn, but was no match for Clouser’s E-85 Ethanol, Illinois Corn Marketing Board, RTS Farms/Beast/Mopar midget in the end. Galloway was the biggest mover of the event starting 11th and finishing fourth. Rounding out the top five behind Clouser and Anderson were, defending Carter Anderson Classic winner, Patrick Wilda, Galloway and Alison McLeod of Mississagua, Ontario, Canada. Aaron Andruskevitch was the fast qualifier for the fourth time this season, while Clouser and Mike Larrison were the heat race winners.

Joe Liguori, grandson of midget legend Ralphie The Racer Liguori, jumped to the lead at the start of the UMARA, USAC Midwest Ford Focus midget feature and held off several late race challenges by Jimmy Simpson and Tyler Cottongim to extend his points lead. Coincidentally his slim points lead in the UMARA Ford Focus series is over Simpson and Cottongim. Cottongim made it an exciting finish driving around Simpson on the last lap coming off of turn four for the checkered flag. Following Liguori in his Pit Stop BBQ/Beast/Ford Focus midget, were Cottongim, Simpson, Tanner Whitten and Tyler Trainor. Cottongim was the fast qualifier and Liguori was the heat race winner.

Rookie phenom, 13 year-old, Taylor Ferns had the crowd on their feet at the start of the UMARA Sportsman midget feature when she went three wide with front row starters Jake Blackhurst and Grant Galloway. Ferns got by Blackhurst but Galloway was able to fend her off for a couple of laps more before finally giving up the lead. Ferns, in her Fathead Sunglasses, Reefer Peterbilt/Beast/Ford Focus midget, went on to win her third feature of the season in dominating fashion over Tyler Cottongim, Jimmy Simpson, Tyler Trainor and Galloway. Ferns dominated the night as she was also fast qualifier and the heat race winner.

New Lenox’s Nick Odell extended his points lead over rival Mike Anderson when Anderson left the race after a lap one altercation with the wall. Odell easily cruised to the win, in his Wright Excavating, Black Dirt Incorporated/ Suzuki Dwarf Car, with Jon McGeorge, Jim Maher, Glen Leiker and Scott Struthers in tow. Anderson was the nights fast qualifier and Odell won the heat race.

Bobby Yonkee won the INEX Rookie Legends feature and heat race and in the INEX Legends a rain shower put the end to the feature event after a first-lap five car incident. Daniel Ivanska and Nick Chiapetta were the heat race winners.

A major announcement was made during the events intermission Saturday night. The UMARA will sanction the Last Auto Racing Event Ever at the Joliet Memorial Stadium on September 11 and 12, 2009. Following the high school football season, the blacktop track and grass field will be torn up and replaced with an actual olympic running track and artificial turf field. A full release will be sent out later this week.

The next event for the UMARA will be on Saturday August 1, 2009 at the Grundy County Speedway.
