DRIVER: Mark Gerth
HOMETOWN: Menomonie, Wisconsin
CLASS: WISSOTA Midwest Mod
CAR NUMBER: 2 WHY THAT NUMBER? “My dad and I came up with it when I started racing karts. My birthday is in the 2nd month, my dad’s birthday is on the 2nd, I am a 2nd generation driver in my family, the 2nd driver in my family, the 2nd child, and my dad raced with a number 1. Lots of things with 2, so 2 it has been from karting and I guess I’ll always be a 2.”

STUDENT: “I’m at CVTC, and eventually I want to go to UW- Stout for Technology Education.”

CREW: Brian Gerth (dad), Josh Borden, and “special thanks to Bob Hulburt and Mark Thomas.”

SPONSORS: T & T Construction LLC, Dean and Sue’s Bar and Grill, Midtown Transmissions, Doug’s Auto Body, Northstar Trucking, J-Car by Bob, CENEX, Bud Light, Racer’s Racing Supplies, Hoffman Homes, Flashin’ Graphics

HOBBIES: “Four wheeling, hunting, snowmobiling, and of course, racing.”

FAVORITE FOOD: (Tostino’s) “Pizza rolls!”

FAVORITE DRIVER: “Jimmy Mars. He is a friend of the family. I have worked for him, so I obviously know him, but I admire him as a driver and a person. He has showed me how to appreciate the joys of racing. How to compete, but really enjoy the sport too.”

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN RACING? “My dad raced in about 1985-86, so being around it then, I knew I wanted to race someday. We have always shared the interest in motor sports, so when I was eight years old, dad got me a racing kart. I started racing at Thunder Hill, where I earned my share of wins, but every Friday night, I’d be at the Red Cedar (Speedway), and just felt the burning inside me to race here.” Editor note; This is Mark’s first year in the Midwest Mods.

MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IN RACING? “Racing at Rice Lake earlier this year, Mark Thomas passed me, and I just tried to follow him. He was so smooth, and we both started to pass cars! Mark has helped me out so much this year. I learned more in a few laps than I had during the rest of the year!”

CAN YOU COMPARE RACING A KART vs A MIDWEST MOD? “A kart is all about being smooth with your racing line. Things are compressed on a kart track, and happen very quickly. There is almost no reaction time, you are reacting on reflex. A fast kart will almost always win. A Midwest Mod, obviously it is much bigger and heavier, but setup is so important. You may have a fast car, but if it can’t get through the turns, you might as well put it on the trailer. You really need to pitch the car into the turns. The competitive nature is the same; all drivers are trying to win. I am having more fun doing this though, this is really something I’ve wanted to do since I started racing.”

WHAT IS IT ABOUT RACING THAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK WEEK AFTER WEEK? “The thrill, the natural high. You get to drive fast, which for me is an awesome rush of adrenaline!” Editor Note, keep up the enthusiasm Mark, it is sure to be contagious!
