| |||
by: Bill Freis Morris, IL 6/13/09 – Kyle Hamilton, Tanner Whitten, Jimmy Simpson, Mike Anderson, Garrett Goodwin and Camden Murphy each won their respective features in the United Midget Auto Racing Associations Saturday night event at the Grundy County Speedway. Hamilton, of Danville, Indiana, extended his points lead when he drove underneath defending UMARA champ Jimmy Anderson on the third circuit, and cruised to his second feature win of the season at the 1/3 mile paved-oval. Following Hamilton to the finish in his Curtis Motor Sales/Beast/Esslinger were Mario Marietta, Mario Clouser, Grant Galloway and Terry Ahern. Tanner Whitten of Carlock, IL not only notched his first UMARA Ford Focus midget feature win Saturday night, but also solidified his name in the USAC/UMARA record books by winning the 500th Ford Focus Midget event. Whitten led all 20 laps of the 500th feature event in his Illinois Corn Marketing Board, E-85 Ethanol powered Beast/Ford Focus midget. The USAC Ford Focus program made its debut seven years ago at Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway with Josh Lakatos winning that event. Since that first event the series has run at 81 different tracks in 24 states producing 143 different winners. Whitten said afterwards “It may not tbe the Indy 500 but it feels like winning Indy to me. To get my first Focus feature win in the 500th event is really special”. Whitten was followed by Joe Liguori, Tyler Cottongim, Tyler Trainor and Jimmy Simpson. Jimmy Simpson of Indianapolis, Indiana took the lead from Zach Kanizer on lap four in his Fat Tommy’s Restaurant/Beast/Ford Focus and was able to hold off 13 year-old Taylor Ferns for the win in the 20-lap UMARA Sportsman midget feature. Following Simpson and Ferns at the finish were Zach Kanizer, Tyler Cottongim and Grant Galloway. Joliet’s (IL) Mike Anderson drove by three cars on lap one of the UMARA Dwarf Car feature to take the lead and was able to fend-off a last lap challenge by points leader Nick Odell in lapped traffic to win his first feature of the season. Following Anderson, in his Dalco Construction, Dupree Truck Parts & Driveshaft/Kawasaki to the stripe were Odell, Jon McGeorge, Jim Maher and Mike Petrizzo. Garrett Goodwin of Three Oaks, Michigan took the lead on lap five of the INEX Legends feature and led the remaining 20 laps in his Hansen Motorsports Yamaha. Rachel Pinkerman, Jimmy Uteg, Dylan Barbosa and Andy Jones rounded out the top five. In the INEX Rookie Legends Peter Bult took the early race lead, but Camden Murphy worked his was past Bult on lap 10 for the lead and would stay there for the remaining five laps. Bult, Cullen Breeden, Alyssa Metallo and Brian Tedeschi followed Murphy at the finish.
