July 30th 2012 - by Paul Gohde - July 29, 2012 - Indianapolis Motor Speedway - Speedway, Indiana (Video Recap)Jimmie Johnson became the second four-time winner of the Brickyard 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race Sunday, as he scored a dominating win over Kyle Busch, Greg Biffle and a field of stunned rivals.Johnson, who first won the event in 2006, and again in 2008 and 2009, tied teammate Jeff Gordon’s four-win total today as he also scored his 58thseries victory.Johnson’s Lowe’s/ Kobalt Tools Chevrolet was strong throughout the race, leading five times for 99 laps-in every segment of the race-as he sped to a 4.758 sec victory over Busch.“I had a 6:00am wake-up call this morning when the cannon went off to open the track. It was loud,” said the winner, who also gave the field a ‘wake-up call’ with his dominating performance. “I thought the 24 and 2 (Gordon and Brad Keselowski) had the same pace as us but I was able to open up a good margin on the restarts.”Biffle and Busch were often victims of those restarts and each paid tribute to Johnson’s dominance.“If it wasn’t for the 48, we were probably in our own zip code on the rest of the field, but Jimmie Johnson was in his own country today, so we just couldn’t keep up with him.” Busch gushed. Biffle agreed with that evaluation: “It didn’t really matter if you were in front of him or not, he was going to pass you in about four or five laps anyway. Sometimes it’s not an advantage to be in front of him, to be honest. It puts you in a position for more guys to be battling with you than one.”Gordon, who brought Johnson to the Hendrick team as a Sprint Cup rookie, was frustrated with finishing fifth as consistency isn’t what he needs to make the Chase field. “We started in the outside lane on both of those last two restarts and that did not do us any favors. You really need to be on the inside,” Gordon said. “My car was really tight, especially on the outside lane, and a little bit in traffic, but it was fast. We proved it all day long by being really fast. But with 20 laps to go, you lose spots like that; it’s going to be hard to make it up. But we got fifth so that’s really solid.”Another driver who needs a win to get closer to making the chase is Carl Edwards who pitted his Fastenal Ford twice early-on and couldn’t recover. “We know it’s some issue. We think it’s with the ECU. We changed that along with the spark plugs, and the engine started running better, said the Edwards, who finished second to Tony Stewart in the 2011 Chase. “I don’t think we’re points racing any more. I think we are officially racing only for wins. We do not quit. We keep going. We put our best effort forth, and if it’s (making the Chase) meant to be, then it’s meant to be.”And as Johnson, crew chief Chad Knaus and team owner Rick Hendrick basked in the glow of their dominating win, it was time for JJ and Knaus to reflect on the day’s accomplishments.“Wow, man that victory lap around the track is something special,” said the five-time Sprint Cup Champion “To come here and win is a huge honor. Then to have four wins-I’m at a loss for words. Chad Knaus gave me one heck of a race car today and pit road was awesome, too.”“The guys at Hendrick Motorsports really took a lot of effort and time and paid attention to details in this race car, Knaus said. “And as we know in this industry, details are what makes the difference. Everybody at HM and especially the 48-88 shop really honed in on the two cars that we brought here.”The race was shaping up to be a fuel mileage run, but an extended caution period from laps 132-140, after an incident in the south chute involving Matt Kenseth, Joey Logano and Bobby Labonte, gave the field the extra fuel they needed to race to the end. “When the caution came out before our (fuel) window, but it was only 2-3 laps before our window, everybody was going to pit, and then try to go the rest of the way, Busch explained. “That really long caution gave everybody the fuel that they needed to in order to go the rest of the way.” But whether it was a fuel mileage race or an all-out sprint, no one was going to catch the “Johnson Rocket’ this day.He took leads on laps 29, 46, 90,101 and 132, showing his total domination of the entire event. And team owner Rick Hendrick perhaps said it best about his winning team: “These two are phenomenal. I’m glad I don’t have to race against them.” :: continue »

May 29th 2011 - INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA May 29, 2011:
By: Mark W. Theisen
The late Sid Collins, for years the radio voice of the Indianapolis 500, always said it takes 500 miles to win the race and once again the sages’ word proved true as it was anybody’s 500 with 10 miles to go and it was Dan Wheldon, the 2005 Indianapolis 500 champion, roaring by a wrecked J.R. Hildebrand who was within sight of winning the race as a rookie to emerge as the surprise winner of the 100th Anniversary 500 today at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. For the second straight year fuel mileage and strategy set the stage for a dramatic finish to the race and it was Hildebrand’s Panther Racing, who has finished second in the last three 500s, that emerged with what was the perfect plan to get their driver to the finish line ahead of the rest of the field but that ended when Hildebrand had to go high up on the track in the final corner of the final lap to avoid a faster car and then hit tire debris or “marbles” and slammed into the wall opening the door for Wheldon who dissected the now disabled car of Hildebrand and that of another lapped car to post the surprise for his Bryan Herta Autosports team.Hildebrand nursed his wounded National Guard sponsored car across the finish line to take second with Graham Rahal in third, Tony Kanaan fourth and Oriol Servia in fifth in a wild ending to a race that had been dominated by the cars from Target Chip Ganassi and driven by defending 500 winner Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon.200 laps earlier Dixon roared ahead of pole winning Alex Tagliani to take the lead entering the first turn of the 95th running of the 500 in the 100th Anniversary year of the first race. It was questionable start to the race in that Dixon was clearly ahead of Tagliani at the start that had traditionally seen 11 rows of 33 cars start side-by-side and that was the desired effect for today’s anniversary edition but no rule exists in Indy Car Racing that guarantees the integrity of the pole sitter leading the first lap. The cars reached the point on the track that they were told they could for the lead and it was Dixon who had the quickest reaction.Tagliani dropped to third at the end of the first lap as Servia was also able to get past him but he began to recover and moved into second on lap 3 as Simona De Silvestro, racing with hands bandaged from burns that came out of a practice crash earlier in the month, brushed the wall in the fourth turn and headed to the pits for repairs. The spirited De Silvestro could not recover from the damage her car after several pit stops and retired from the race on lap 44 after being many laps down.Tagliani began to reel in Dixon and took the lead on lap 8 completing the pass coming down the front straightaway, the first time he had led a lap at Indianapolis in his three career starts. On lap 21 Takuma Sato got out of the groove in turn one and brushed the concrete retaining wall between turns one and two bringing out the first of what would be a seven caution period race. One of the questions of how Tagliani would fare in the race after dominating practice and qualifying was his pits stops however his Sam Schmidt Motorsports team quickly silenced the critics by sending their driver out first after the pits stops that ensued after the caution came out.Team Penske, the winner of fifteen Indy 500s began to have troubles early on in the race as Will Power, the current Indy Racing League point leader left the pits without his left rear tire and hand to go around and make a second stop. He was not penalized for the incident but after losing one lap in the process was never a factor in the race finishing 14th.Dixon, Wheldon, Servia and Franchitti followed Tagliani out of the pits as racing resumed on lap 27 but he could only lead one lap before Dixon moved to the front as E.J. Viso went high in turn one to pass James Hinchcliffe on lap 28 with the two cars making contact. Viso hit the wall hard ending his day as the second caution flag quickly followed the first. The tightly bunched field on the restart was the result of a new rule this year in the Indy Car League that requires side-by-side restarts following a caution period and the results of the first attempt at this new rule in Indianapolis produced the expected close quarter racing and in the end it brought out a quick yellow. With pits stops just being completed all the front running cars stayed on the track and Dixon led Tagliani, Townsend Bell, Franchitti and Servia on the restart on lap 33. Tagliani was able to get around Dixon on lap 34 but could only rule the front for one lap before surrendering the point back to Dixon.Franchitti than began to assert his power passing Tagliani on lap 44 with Wheldon taking third on that same lap. Tagliani was now fourth and his car did not look as trim as it did when running with a full load of fuel.Green flag pit stops began on lap 61 with Dixon giving up the lead to Franchitti just as Jay Howard crashed coming out of the pit acceleration lane following his stop. His car seemed to wiggle while trying to blend in with the field and he hit the wall brining out yellow number 3.With some cars having pitted under the green prior to the yellow the others had the chance to make a less stressful stop and yellow bunched up the field for another side-by-side restart.Ed Carpenter led for one lap under the yellow before making his stop and it was Franchitti leading Dixon, Wheldon, Tagliani and Bell on the restart on lap 70.Dixon took the lead three laps into the restart and led the next 26 laps before green flag pit stops again loomed in the future. With a 1.3816 second lead Dixon pulled off on lap 99 to make his pit stop giving the lead to his teammate Franchitti and as had happened earlier, the yellow flag came out after nearly half the field had made their stops.Hinchcliffe was the victim this time getting high in the turn, hitting the SAFER Barrier with his car slowing to a stop in the first turn, the day over for this rookie.Several cars including Danica Patrick, Bertrand Baguette and Marco Andretti were caught with nearly empty fuel tanks as the pit was closed after the caution came out. Faced with running out of fuel they were allowed to stop for a splash of fuel and no tires and were then sent out on the track to wait for the pits to re-open.This put these cars out of sequence with the rest of the field and set up the possibility that fuel mileage could compound all the other elements that surround this race.Hildebrand was able to lead a lap during this caution to be the first of the five rookies in the race to lead a lap at Indianapolis.Green flag racing resumed on lap 107 with Franchitti leading followed by Servia, Marco Andretti, Carpenter and Dixon as the running order was shuffled because of the different stops.Servia took the lead on lap 113 for his first time at the point of the 500 in three starts and led for 16 laps before a determined Franchitti closed back in to retake the lead.Green flag pit were the order by lap 137 with Hildebrand and Baguette again leading laps before making their stops and if the race went green the rest of the way it was playing into these two drivers hands. Some of that strategy went away when Tagliani brought out the sixth caution on lap 148 the day ending for the pole winner in a fashion that many hoped would not. “The rear of the car continued to get loose as the race went on,” said Tagliani. “We did all we could to correct the problem but could not and it was a struggle. I had the car on the edge and I just could not keep it under control at the end. It’s a shame our month had to end like this but our team did a fantastic job.”Three laps into the restart the cars of Bell and Ryan Briscoe made contact in the first turn to bring out caution number six and now it was clear with 36 laps remaining that today’s Indianapolis 500 would become a race of fuel strategy. That was clear when Patrick was kept on the track after pitting during the Tagliani yellow while others made second stops. Baguette, Tomas Scheckter, Marco Andretti, Rahal and Hildebrand were also rolling the dice as was Franchitti when he dove into the pits just prior to the restart coming out on the track with those 36 laps remaining and in 11th place after leading 51 laps in the race to this point. It was clear he and his team were in fuel conservation mode as the race resumed.Rahal was in front after the sequence of stops was over and led when the green flag appeared trailed by Servia, Dixon, Scheckter, Tony Kanaan and Wheldon. When Graham led his first lap he joined his father Bobby as father-son lap leaders at Indy joining a group of five other combinations that have done so in the past.Rahal led until lap 172 surrendering the lead to Dixon and was forced to stop on lap 178 for his fuel but he was still not done yet as he led the other short pit stop teams in and thus was placed in a prime position for a shot at the win.A lap later Dixon, Servia and Kanaan went to pit road for fuel and tires giving the lead to Patrick who was told by her team to be in a fuel conservation strategy as they hoped to get far enough ahead on the track that when they made their stop they could still emerge with the lead but she did not have the right set up on the car for her to implement that plan.Qualifying 25th and facing starting back in the field her car was set up with more down force than those in front so as to negotiate traffic. This left her without the straight track speed she needed to get far enough ahead and she was tracked down by Baguette on the track by lap 189 and he was now in front with Patrick and Marco Andretti taking to the pits the following lap. While all this was happening Franchitti was making his way to the front and by lap 194 he was in second but a whopping 8.2207 seconds behind the leader. On lap 197 Baguette’s dream ended when he had to stop for fuel giving the way to Hildebrand with just two laps remaining and with Franchitti now running nearly 5 miles an hour slower than the leader as it was clear his car was not going to make it to the end.Hildebrand roared under the white flag with Wheldon, Dixon and Rahal behind and one lap from winning the race as a rookie.Coming out of the fourth turn that all ended with Wheldon passing his disabled car and the race finishing under the seventh and final yellow of the race.Replay of the finish showed that Wheldon was ahead of the Hildebrand’s car before the yellow came out and this he was rewarded with his second 500 win and first for his team owner Herta.“I was just trying to go as hard as I could,” said a beaming Wheldon in victory lane. “I knew it was the last lap and I was told some of those guys were struggling with fuel. I want to thank my team; they gave me all that I needed, including fuel, to get the job done. This is just an incredible feeling!” Incredible indeed! This win came in what is referred to at Indy as a one-off entry, meaning that it was a one race deal for both driver and team. Despite being a former race winner and twice a runner-up finisher, Wheldon entered 2011 with no deal. Honda assisted in getting him united with Herta and with the help of Sam Schmidt Motorsports a deal was put together to put him in the race.“It was all him (Wheldon),” said Herta. “His enthusiasm carried us. He had the attitude and that carried over to everyone on the team. He made us believe in everything we were doing and it worked, I don’t know how it worked but it worked.”“When it came to the end,” Herta continued, “we wanted to give him all the fuel he needed. We saw what the others were doing but we stuck to our plan. I know his (Sam Schmidt’s) cars (Tagliani and Bell) did not fare as well today but without their help we would not be here talking to you as winners of this race. In addition to their load, they took on ours and we own them a tremendous debt of gratitude.”For Hildebrand it was truly a wide spectrum of emotions after the race. “As a rookie I was not expected to be in this situation,” said Hildebrand, “but because of their knowledge of this race they had me in a position to win the race and for that I feel I let them down.”“I was not entirely aware of where we were in the race until late. I was just trying to get the car to the end when they (crew) came on the radio and told me to slow down and save fuel for the end I knew we were close and then they came on the radio and said I was leading.”“On that final lap I was catching the 83 (Kimball – a lapped car) and I choose to pass on the high side as I did all race long but this time, because of the long stint between cautions to sweep the debris from the track I slid into the wall. I feel bad for the team and our sponsor the National Guard because it would have been their day on the stage, a day they truly deserved.”“This feels good,” said Rahal, “that’s for sure. I mean this it is all about you know? We needed to ride the momentum and we did. And this is obviously a lot better than the second place we had in Brazil because this is Indy. I’m so proud of our team because of how they stuck in there after qualifying poorly. We passed 26 cars today and that’s fantastic.”Ironically, Rahal drives in a satellite team owned by Chip Ganassi in the first year of operation and he finished ahead of the lead team drivers Dixon and Franchitti.Kanaan passed more cars today than anyone else, 49, and said, “We had a problem on a pit stop because of somebody else and that put us way back, but we had a good car and drove hard all day. It was a lot of fun and I happy for Dan (Wheldon) he has been trough a lot and I know how he feels.”Kanaan was without a firm ride for 2011 until five days prior to the season and struggled to find a sponsor deal to align him with a team. Wheldon was released from Panther Racing last year and was not as lucky to put a full season deal together as Kanaan. In the end it was very ironic that Wheldon beat the team that let him go last year. After leading a race high 73 laps Dixon was disappointed with his finish. “Between Dario (Franchitti) and myself, we had this one pretty well-covered,” said Dixon. “We got short-fueled at the end and why we got short-fueled I don’t know. We stopped 10 laps later than anyone else on any strategy, there’s no way we should have run out of fuel it happened and it is disappointing.”Servia, Baguette, Scheckter, Marco Andretti and Patrick rounded out the top 10.“That’s what you have to do here at Indy,” said Patrick when asked about the team’s strategy selection. “You have to take a chance because it’s win or bust here for the most part. While its great to have a top-five finishes every weekend, Indy is about winning and that is why we did what we did. You are given a set of circumstances each year and have to deal with them as best you can. Hopefully one day it will be our turn.”Wheldon is the 18th multiple winner of the 500 and set a record of he fewest number of lead laps by a winner, one. Joe Dawson, in 1912, led two in winning the second 500 in history. This was also the second time that a driver lost the lead of the 500 on the last lap and both times the victim was a rookie driver. In 2006 Andretti lost the lead to Sam Hornish Jr. out of the final turn on the final lap as well. The Penske car’s finished 16th, 17th and 27th with Power actually finishing ahead of three time 500 winner and teammate Helio Castroneves. It was a very atypical day for the Penske contingent.Obviously Hildebrand was the highest finishing rookie of the race and Patrick led the four woman contingent ahead of Pippa Mann, Ana Beatriz and De Silvestro. In addition to Wheldon, Dixon, Franchitti and Castroneves, Buddy Rice the other former winner in the race finished 18th.A dramatic end to a dramatic century at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as Wheldon saluted his mother, afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease and dedicated his win to her and her support over his career. :: continue »

April 11th 2011 - EVERY ONE IN A WHILE, I GET AN E-MAIL THAT REALLY IMPACTS ME. I WANT TO SHARE THIS ON WITH ALL MY FELLOW MARINES - SEMPER FI - BRONCO
As I came out of the supermarket that sunny day, pushing my cart of
groceries towards my car, I saw an old man with the hood of his car up and a
lady sitting inside the car, with the door open.
The old man was looking at the engine. I put my groceries away in my car,
and continued to watch the old gentleman from about twenty-five feet away.
I saw a young man in his early twenties with a grocery bag in his arm
walking towards the old man. The old gentleman saw him coming too, and took a few steps towards him.
I saw the old gentleman point to his open hood and say something. The young
man put his grocery bag into what looked like a brand new Cadillac Escalade.
He then turned back to the old man. I heard him yell at the old gentleman saying:
'You shouldn't even be allowed to drive a car at your age.' And then with a wave of his hand, he got in his car and peeled rubber out of the
parking lot.
I saw the old gentleman pull out his handkerchief, and mop his brow as he
went back to his car and again looked at the engine.
He then went to his wife and spoke with her; he appeared to tell her it
would be okay. I had seen enough, and I approached the old man. He saw me coming and stood straight, and as I got near him Isaid, 'Looks like you're having a problem.'
He smiled sheepishly, and quietly nodded his head. I looked under the hood
myself, and knew that whatever the problem was, it was beyond me.
Looking around, I saw a gas station up the road, and I told the old man
that I would be right back. I drove to the station and went I inside. I saw
three attendants working on cars.
I approached one of them, and related the problem the old man had with his
car. I offered to pay them if they could follow me back down and help him.
The old man had pushed the heavy car under the shade of a tree and appeared
to be comforting his wife. When he saw us he straightened up and thanked me for my help. As the mechanics diagnosed the problem (overheated
engine), I spoke with the old gentleman.
When I shook hands with him earlier, he had noticed my Marine Corps ring and had commented about it, telling me that he had been a Marine too. I nodded and asked the usual question, 'What outfit did you serve with?'
He had mentioned that he served with the first Marine Division at Tarawa,
Saipan, Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal
....
He had hit all the big ones and retired from the Corps after the war was
over. As we talked, we heard the car engine come on and saw the mechanics
lower the hood. They came over to us as the old man reached for his wallet,
but was stopped by me. I told him I would just put the bill on my AAA card.
He still reached for the wallet and handed me a card that I assumed had his
name and address on it and I stuck it in my pocket. We all shook hands all
around again, and I said my goodbye's to his wife.
I then told the two mechanics that I would follow them back up to the
station.
Once at the station, I told them that they had interrupted their own jobs
to come along with me and help the old man. I said I wanted to pay for the
help, but they refused to charge me.
One of them pulled out a card from his pocket, looking exactly like the card
the old man had given to me. Both of the men told me then that they were
Marine Corps Reserves. Once again we shook hands all around and as I was
leaving, one of them told me I should look at the card the old man had given
to me. I said I would and drove off.
For some reason I had gone about two blocks, when I pulled over and took the
card out of my pocket and looked at it for a long, long time.
The name of the old gentleman was on the card in golden leaf and under his
name was written: 'Congressional Medal of Honor Society.'
I sat there motionless, looking at the card and reading it over and over. I
looked up from the card and smiled to no one but myself and marveled that on
this day, four Marines had all come together because one of us needed help.
He was an old man all right, but it felt good to have stood next to greatness and courage, and an honor to have been in his presence. Remember, OLD men like him gave you FREEDOM for America . Thanks to those who served and still serve, and to all of those who supported them, and who continue to support them. America is not at war. The U.S. Military is at war. America is at the Mall.
If you don't stand behind our troops, PLEASE feel free to stand in front
of them! Remember, Freedom isn't Free. Thousands have paid the price, so that you can enjoy what you have today. :: continue »

October 1st 2010 - A PROMISING START:
Milwaukee Mile Race Promoters Respond to Flood of Early Ticketing Requests
Indianapolis, Indiana September 20, 2010 – Following the recent announcement that the IndyCar Series will return to the Milwaukee Mile in 2011, fans have flocked to the event phone number and website, www.milwaukeemile2011.com.
According to promoter AB Productions CEO Chris McGrath, “Response has been outstanding. In just a few days following the racing schedule press conference, we have received thousands of calls and requests about tickets for the June 19, 2011 race – many from prior season ticket holders. The support and well wishes from so many so early deepens our conviction that we’re on track for a great weekend in Milwaukee on Father’s Day next year.
Fan should know that the promoter of the event, AB Promotions, will be contacting former season ticket holders who have registered on the website or called the company with offers for them to purchase tickets for the 2011 event. “Our goal is to place them in or as close to their former seats as possible,” commented McGrath. Once prior season ticket holders have been reticketed, a process that is expected to take about 30 days, individual tickets will be offered to the general public.
Former season ticket holders who have not already done so should fill out the online ticket inquiry form on www.milwaukeemile2011.com or call 1-800-722-3840 prior to September 30 to ensure they are contacted in advance of the general public ticket sales. April 18th 2010 - THE MILWAUKEE MILE:
NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE
By: Mark W. Theisen
West Allis, Wisconsin April 18, 2010: As I sit and plan my 2010 racing calendar it seems so sad not to include any events at Wisconsin State Fair Park Speedway, The Milwaukee Mile.
Since attending the 1958 Rex Mays Classic as an 11 year old, my first ever trip to “The Mile” I have had a long and friendly association with the oldest continually operating race track in the United States and that is what makes the cessation of major league racing so hard to take.
As a fan I watched Tony Bettenhausen, A.J. Foyt, Rodger Ward, Norm Nelson, Mario Andretti, Parnelli Jones and a host of other daredevils entertain and amaze myself with their talents. As a pitman for the legendary Billy “The Cat” Johnson I worked on his cars competing on the tight quarter-mile clay oval that was in the center of The Mile on many a Thursday evening.
After my military service I served as a staff photographer under Phil Hall for many years at “The Mile” and finally as a reporter for the Midwest Racing News, The Checkered Flag Racing News and lastly this website, so it does indeed feel eerie not to be planning on covering a major event at the track in 2010.
Last winter, after the failure of the 2009 promoter the Wisconsin State Fair Park entered into negotiations with several entities to become the 2010 promoter or promotional group. At several junctures race fans were buoyed by good news that a group would come forth and racing would continue but in the end all negotiations fell apart and without a financially solid promoter or promotional entity in place both major United States sanctioning groups: NASCAR and the Indy Racing League severed their ties with Milwaukee and left the track without major events for the first time since the track and all tracks were stuttered throughout the country during the second World War.
NASCAR has since moved on to Road America at Elkhart Lake and will race the Nationwide series cars their on June 19th on what would have been the traditional event at Milwaukee. I’m happy, on one hand, that NASCAR will remain in Wisconsin and hope for a successful event for Road America. On the other hand, if the event proves to be successful the chances of the race ever returning to Milwaukee become even darker.
The Indy Racing League will not race at all in Wisconsin this year and it’s event in Joliet, Illinois this fall will be the closest they get to the Badger state after being a part of the racing scene for decades.
But is The Mile dead? The answer is No. Yes they do not have a major event scheduled, one that would produce the kind of revenue the Wisconsin State Fair Park needs in order to continue to pay the debt service obligation on the new grandstand built to insure that major league racing stayed in Milwaukee but they have events that will keep the track alive, albeit not in the same fashion it has been used to for the last 100 years.
May 15th will see the first event of 2010; the Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series will stage a one day event at the track. Racing Schools will operate on May 26th, June 26th and 27th as well at the Drivetech Racing School on August 20the, 21st and 28th.
Even though NASCAR has abandoned the track for racing they will return for three tire testing events, June 8th & 9th: June 14th and 15th; and August 23rd and 24th. The flat Milwaukee track is well suited for the NASCAR teams to test on prior to events at similar configured tracks.
American Speed Association events on July 16th & 17th and September 10th & 11th will bring stock car racing back to the track in what promises to exciting racing as young talents, with their sights set on moving on to NASCAR, will get an opportunity to race on a track that once hosted the cars they hope to one day compete in.
June 4th through the 6th will host the Wisconsin Grand Prix Double Regional event for sports cars and September 3 rd through the 5th will see the a high speed auto cross weekend at the track.
The last event on the schedule and the one with ties to the past, The Millers at Milwaukee – A Vintage Indy Car Event is set for July 9th through the 11th and will feature the annual display of many vintage cars that competed on The Mile and around the world. The late Dave Uhlein, so loved this event and this year will be the first since his passing and it expected to be a stellar display of vintage cars in his honor.
The Milwaukee Mile continues to operate its website: www.milwaukeemile.com for those interested in keeping up with what is scheduled or for any additions or deletions as the summer passes.
One can only hope that in time, perhaps a better economical climate for this country and a promoter that possess the grit and pizzazz to revitalize and return the track to its proper position as one of American’s premier racing venues will be possible. :: continue »

April 13th 2010 - By Dee Lindbeck
WOW! If you haven't seen NHRA drag racing yet in 2010 you're really missing out! First of
all, the Top Fuel and Funny Cars are still racing to the 1000 foot mark (and the
controversy over that is still on) while all other classes are racing to the full quarter
mile ( 1320 feet).
You take 8000 HP per car in Top Fuel & Funny Car, then stand near the starting line when
two of them launch....wow it makes your hair stand on end, your insides shake and your
eyeballs shimmy for the first 100 to 200 feet of the run! If you blink twice, they're on
the finish line in T.F.= 3.79 seconds going 322 mph, & F.C.= 4.02 seconds at 316 mph.
Now NHRA with South Carolina's four-wide Nationals jumped off the hook! The track has
four lanes (instead of the normal two) with a cement barrier in between lanes 2 & 3. They
run Pro Stock Cars, Pro Stock Motorcycles, Top Fuel & Funny Cars side by side by side by
side. Now I ask you, if T.F. & F. C. Already make your body react like that, what will
32,000 HP with four wide do? I can tell you, I'm going next year to find out! If you love
speed 300-325 mph. In 1000 feet, like I do, it makes my year! Ground pounding, ear
piercing (bring ear plugs), nitro burning (eyes watering) drag racing at it's best!!!!
When the nitro cleared, the winner of Top Fuel = Cory McClenathan, Funny Car = John
Force, Pro Stock Car = Mike Edwards & Pro Stock Motorcycle = Matt Smith. Now there is big
controversy with Bruton Smith who built the 4 lane wide ZMAX raceway to bring darg racing
forward. Race fane & race drivers alike are voting both ways. Stick around and see what
happens???????
With cars racing with nitro still blowing up, some drivers feel we need more fuel
reulations to control these motors to keep them from "bombing". Suzuki droped a
bunch of weight to compete better with the Harleys & Buell's in motorcycle.
Ashley Force Hood is currently the fastest women driver in the 1000 ft. mark with the 316
mph. She ran at the gator nationals. John Force (dad) is leading the points in Funny Car
with 2 wins in the first four events. Cory McClenathan is leading in Top Fuel with 2 wins
in four events. Mike Edwards is dominating again this year in Pro Stock Car. Motorcycles
only have 2 events down. Stay tuned, I promise you in will be GREAT! Go Full Throddle or
Go Home!!!!!
EDITOR's NOTE: Dee and I used to work together, and our racing friendship was formed from the first time I met her. She is my "go to gal" when it comes to the NHRA. Dee is a real race fan! Thanks Dee! - BRONCO :: continue »

December 22nd 2009 - Associated Press
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. -- NASCAR's Nationwide series will stay in Wisconsin next year, shifting its race next year to Road America from the financially troubled Milwaukee Mile.
The twisting road course in central Wisconsin will host a Nationwide race on Saturday, June 19.
That replaces the Milwaukee Mile, which will not host major racing events in 2010. The Wisconsin State Fair Park board of directors, which oversees the Milwaukee track, has been unable to make a deal with a new promoter but still hopes to bring major events back there in 2011. :: continue »

May 31st 2009 - BY: MARK W. THEISEN WEST ALLIS, WISCONSIN May 31, 2009: Scott Dixon has won it all: the Indianapolis 500, the Indy Racing League championship and big races all over the country but was never more jubilant in a victory lane as he was today following his tough win over defending race champion Ryan Briscoe in the Indy Racing League’s ABC Supply/AJ Foyt 225 at the legendary Milwaukee Mile inside Wisconsin State Fair Park. “When you when a win a race here, you’ve know you’ve earned it,” said a beaming Dixon. “From crashing two cars in the span of four laps in my debut here in 2005, I have set a goal to conquer this place and today we did it.” And the conquering was not easy, it never is at any track but throw in the tightness of the Milwaukee track and the closeness of the entire Indy Racing League and you have the mixture of an exciting race and the nice crowd on hand this afternoon was treated to yet another strategy filled and entertaining race. Briscoe, who turned his racing career around a year ago here with a win, put his Penske Racing Dallara on the pole on Saturday afternoon with a speed of 168.394 miles per hour while his teammate and the winner of last week’s Indianapolis 500 Helio Castroneves did not fair as well crashing on his qualifying lap to relegate him to the final starting spot on the grid for today’s race, a foreboding start to the weekend that unfortunately would not improve for the driver that entered the weekend as the 2009 Indy Racing League point leader. It was Tony Kanaan, the winner here in 2006 and 2007, which surprised both front starters, Briscoe and Graham Rahal to shoot past both of them going down the back stretch on the first lap to lead the 20 car field at the conclusion of the first lap. Kanaan led the first 25 laps of the race before surrendering the lead to Briscoe as the handling began to go away on his Andretti-Green owned race car. Add the handling woes to the injuries that Kanaan suffered last Sunday in a hard crash at Indianapolis and you had the element for a long day, but Kanaan shouldered on for 62 more laps before mechanical woes put him out of the race. As was the case last week at Indy, the car in front faired better in clean air, but with the track being only a mile in length versus two and half miles last week the clean air was a much more precious commodity here as lapped cars continuously impeded the lead cars all race long. When Briscoe took the lead he brought Dixon and Rahal along with him to the front in the same pass. Dario Franchitti, Hideki Mutoh, and Danica Patrick were the next to get around Kanaan as the first round of green flag pit stops were approaching. But that would not happen as rookie Mike Conway, in an effort to allow Dan Wheldon to pass him, slid up in the tire “marbles” and hit the wall exiting turn four to bring out the first yellow of the race. Just prior to the caution an interesting scenario was unfolding on the track as Briscoe was closing in on Castroneves and that pass would have put his teammate a lap down on the leaders but with the yellow that dilemma was postponed until later in the race. Briscoe entered and left the pits as the leader followed by Dixon, Franchitti, Rahal, Mutoh and Patrick and once under green it was Briscoe again in control but never really shaking the Target-Ganassi Racing tandem of Dixon and Franchitti. By lap 105 Briscoe was again closing in on Castroneves but this time with his lead being challenged he had no choice but to lap his struggling teammate just to hold on to the lead. Once he was a lap down Castroneves became a blocker for Briscoe as he held up the both Dixon and Franchitti for several laps while Briscoe moved to his largest lead of the race. The first round of green flag pit stops began on lap 127 and the leaders began making their stops on lap 132 with first Franchitti, than Rahal, Patrick and Mutoh stopping for fuel and tires. Briscoe surrendered the lead on lap 132 when he made his stop with Dixon following a lap later. When all the stops were done it was Franchitti in front, his team making up for a dismal pip performance at Indianapolis last week that, in all likelihood, cost them the race, with Briscoe, Dixon, Rahal, Raphael Matos, Mutoh and Wheldon following. Patrick’s team made handling changes to her car that put here back to 8th after the green flag stops were completed. Strategy began to form as speculation that some cars could make it to the end without stopping again but that all went out the window on lap 160 when the yellow was thrown for an excessive build up of tire “marbles” in the corners that posed a treat for cars trying to get out of the way of leaders. The yellow allowed the sweepers to clean the track and all cars to the pits for fuel and tires that would take them to the finish without another stop. Castroneves elected not to make a pit stop and was thus waived around the pace car on the restart to get back on the lead lap, albeit, at the end of it. Briscoe had taken the lead from Franchitti just prior to the caution and was first out of the pits after the stops followed by Dixon, Franchitti, Rahal, Matos, Patrick and Marco Andretti. On the restart it was Andretti on the move moving quickly to fifth only to begin to fall back as the handling quickly went away on his car. For the next 40 laps Dixon looked for an opening as he shadowed Briscoe’s every move only to have the leader successfully block his every attempt as they weaved their way through the heavy amount of lapped traffic. Dixon saw an opportunity on lap 200 when the lapped car of Tomas Scheckter was severely holding up Briscoe’s attempt to get by. Dixon made a move down the back straight and was ahead by the third turn forcing Briscoe to back off or crash and once in the lead Dixon asserted his power to pull away to as much as a four second lead at times, only to see that drop to less than 1.5 seconds as lapped cars slowed him as well. But for each slow down he experienced so did his rivals and at the end he was 2.1257 seconds ahead of Briscoe with Franchitti, Rahal and Patrick rounding out the top five. With his win today Dixon became the first two time winner in 2009 on the circuit and moved to the point lead. “This win is just the culmination of a lot of hard work,” continued Dixon. “It is just so tough to win here, the traffic is tough, and the track is tough, so for us to come out on top is just fantastic. I was trying to get the flow of traffic the whole race and at the end it just came to us. We had many runs on Briscoe and he did what he had to but he definitely got caught up there with (Tomas) Scheckter and I took to the bottom to get him. I just have to thank our whole team for improving our short oval program so well.” “It was a great race,” said Briscoe, who after crashing in three of his first four races with Penske racing last year before winning here. “Scott (Dixon) was just a little better than me at the end. He got me in traffic, I was struggling with a bit of understeer and whenever I’d get on the inside I’d loose momentum and he just got me. A good job by him! He was there all day long.” Franchitti said his car just was not right in traffic but he was pleased overall. “The hard thing was lapped cars. It was timing your pass so as not to lose so much over the car in front of you. I’d think I got it right and, shoot, I’d fall back. It was a great day for our team,” said Franchitti, who closed to Briscoe rear late in the race but just could not make the pass. “I really tried hard to pass him but when we were close he would take air off my nose and there was nothing I could do. The Milwaukee Mile produces close racing and you’re really fighting lapped traffic all day long.” Rahal, who stayed in the top five all race long, completed his goal of bringing the car home to the finish. After crashing out in the last two Indy 500’s and here last year he said, “It was out goal to finish and we are happy with fourth. We were the fourth best car all day long and we wound up there. The traffic at the end hurt us, but all in all I’m pleased with how the day went.” Last year Patrick was all gruff following the race here after an incident with Wheldon. Today she was nothing but smiles after her 4th top five finish in a row brought her to a career best fourth in the point standings. “We are having fun,” said Patrick. “We are being consistent over run and everyone on the team is working hard and having fun at it and with just a little bit more luck we can do even better.” Matos, Andretti, Mutoh, Moraes and Wheldon rounded out the top ten as only 8 cars were on the lead lap at the finish. “That the way it is,” said the ever smiling Castroneves after his unusually trying day that saw him slip to fifth in the standings although only 25 points behind Dixon as the battle for the 2009 Indy Car title is already shaping up to be a dandy. The two caution periods for only 22 laps helped contribute to the fastest race here in quite a while. Dixon averaged 138.784 enroute to his win. The series now moves to a Texas Motor Speedway next Saturday night for round six in the 2009 chase.*EOS :: continue »

May 24th 2009 - By: Mark W. Theisen INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA May 24, 2009: The month of May 2009 will be forever ingrained in the mind of Helio Castroneves. First he is acquitted of Federal Tax Evasion charges just over a month ago and returns to open wheel racing, then thoroughly dominates the month of May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway: winning the pole; then the pit stop contest and then finally the ultimate victory in winning the 93rd running of the Indianapolis 500. So dominate was the powerful Roger Penske owned and prepared race car that the outcome was really never in question as the 500 miles unfolded. The team strategy was to take it easy until the final pit stop and then turn on the power and when that time came Castroneves was never headed to claim the unimaginable 15th Indianapolis 500 win for Penske. The win for Castroneves today was his third in 9 starts at Indy. After winning his first two 500’s in 2001 & 2002 it took him seven years to return to victory circle at Indy but this win places him in a very elite group of 6 drivers who have won the race three times and with being 34 years old he could conceivably become the first driver to win the race five times, only three have won it four times: A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears, the latter two being Penske drivers so the outlook is very good for the personable Brazilian driver whose trials and tribulations of the past year have endeared him even more to his legion of fans. The start of the race saw Marco Andretti and Mario Moraes come together in the first turn of the first lap wiping out the hopes of the third generation Andretti family member before even getting started. Each driver claimed the other came down on him but the end result was yet another set back for Andretti who lost the 2006 500 on the last lap to the last Penske winner here, Sam Hornish Jr. Castroneves led the first lap of the race and then through the 6 laps of caution to clean the track of debris from the first lap crash. On the restart 2007 winner, Dario Franchitti got the jump on Castroneves and was in front before the first turn and once in front he was able to make use of the “clean air” to pull away from the rest of the field. The race started under warm and humid conditions with a threat of rain and with the humidity came very unstable air for the cars that were running behind the leader and with that came a race strategy that called for getting the car out of the pits the fastest and between Penske and Ganassi, none does it better than they do at Indy. Ryan Hunter- Reay brought out the second caution with a hard crash on lap 21 after he swerved to avoid the car of A.J. Foyt IV in the second turn after the latter got loose just ahead of his car. This yellow set up the first round of pits stops and it was Franchitti’s crew sending him out ahead of Castroneves teammate Ryan Briscoe with Castroneves now in third followed by last year’s winner Scott Dixon and rookie Raphael Matos. Castroneves surrendered third to Dixon on lap 28 as he was content to follow team strategy and protect the car until the time came to him and he seemed content to follow those orders considering they came from a man and a team that had won the race 14 times before, many of those time by just plain outsmarting his competition. The day ended for Graham Rahal on lap 57 as while running in the top five he encountered several cars slowing to make pits stops and just got his car up out of the racing groove and into the fourth turn wall brining out the third caution of the race. This caution again set up the second round of pit stops with Briscoe emerging from the stop with the lead but he once under the green Dixon roared past him as the lap worn on he continued to drop back, the victim of a mismatched set of tires that forced him to make a green flag pit stop to change the tires, a stop that put him a lap off the pace of the leaders but with nearly three-fourths of the race let it was not a time to panic for the Penske driver and his team. Dixon remained in front for the next 22 laps until veteran Davey Hamilton got out of the racing groove to allow faster cars by him and got caught in the “marbles” near the wall losing control of car sliding in the fourth turn wall on lap 83. The fourth rounds of pit stops were completed during this caution with Franchitti being turned out ahead of Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Castroneves, Matos, Will Power and Danica Patrick. After the caution it was Dixon and Kanaan who were on the move with Dixon retaking the lead on lap 91 pursued by Kanaan whose day abruptly came to an end 8 laps later when “something broke” on the car going down the backstretch and he lost control of the car sending him hard into the third turn wall causing yet another heartbreak at Indianapolis for a driver who has been the sentimental favorite for some years here not quite being able to muster enough racing luck to pull off the victory. Robert Doornbos brought out the sixth caution of the race on lap 132 with a crash also in the fourth turn as he was trying to make his way to pit road. This was the time of the race to shine for the pit crews and it was Dixon out first followed by Castroneves, Power, Dan Wheldon, Townsend Bell, Paul Tracy and Briscoe, returning to the top ten after getting back on the lead the previous caution by not pitting with the leaders. Franchitti experienced trouble in the pits that put him far back in the running order on the restart, a hole he would not be able to dig out of the rest of the race. It took just two laps into the restart for Castroneves to exert the power that everyone expected from him all day long as he shot around Dixon on lap 141 to lead lap 142 and once in that “clean” air his car looked unbeatable but he would have to race 58 more laps and that is an eternity at Indianapolis. Justin Wilson had a hard crash in the first turn on lap 161 to bring out caution number seven after having the air taken off his rear spoiler sending his car in a full 360 degree spin before striking the wall. Now with fewer than 40 laps remaining it was crunch time for the front running cars as if the race were to run to the end under green this would be the crucial stop. Team Penske was flawless in sending out Castroneves in first followed by Briscoe, whose crew was order to not fill the tank entirely on the stop to gain valuable track position and also provide a “buffer” between Castroneves and the rest of the field. Wheldon, the 2005 500 winner, was turned out in third by his Panther Racing Team followed by Patrick, whose Andretti-Green Racing crew gave here tremendous stops to place her in contention when the time counted. Bell and Power followed Patrick with Dixon slipping to seventh after this stop as his usually strong Ganassi pit crew faltered today when it really counted. On the restart it was Castroneves again in control but with his having enough fuel to make it to the end in question Penske ordered Briscoe around him to lead the race. That decision was made because the leader uses more fuel and they could have Briscoe pull him for a while, thus saving fuel for the latter. That decision was made moot on lap 174 when a horrific crash between Vitor Meira and Matos brought out the caution for the 8th time. The pair, battling for a top ten position touched wheels going into the first turn sending Meira’s car sideways and head first into the wall in the first turn. Meira’s car then got tipped up and rode along the wall for several hundred feet before returning to its wheels in the short chute between the first and second turn. It took crews several minutes to carefully extract Meira from the car. He was alert and awake but was transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for further examination after complaining of excessive back pain. Meira was able to move his hands and feet but track physicians felt he needed more exams necessitating the trip to the hospital. With 8 laps needed to clean up the debris from the crash the fuel strategy was thrown out the window and when Castroneves hit the throttle all it left was a battle for second. Patrick challenged Wheldon on that final restart but the side by side action allowed Castroneves to pull out to his lead. At the end it was a 1.9819 win over Wheldon, Patrick, Bell and Power. Dixon and Franchitti, who together led the race for 123 laps finished 6th and 7th after being let down by their pit crews during the key stops of the race. Ed Carpenter, Tracy and Hideki Mutoh rounded out the top ten. “This is incredible,” said a tearful Castroneves in victory circle after doing his signature fence climb following a victory in front of his fans. “I think my tears speak for everything. What a great team. I just have to thank, first of all, the Lord for giving me this opportunity, to be strong, to have a family that I have. I have to thank Roger (Penske), Tim (Cindric), my guys and sponsors and obviously the fans. You guys (the fans) don’t understand. You kept me strong. You are the best. I am honored to have fans like you. Thanks so much. Let’s celebrate now” Castroneves tax ordeal ended in April but was Penske who stood behind his driver all along and has to be given all the credit for his belief in the justice system and the fact that he knew his driver did nothing wrong. Penske has Power in Castroneves car to start the season and once acquitted he was back in the car. For his help Power was rewarded with a 500 start that ended with a top five finish but now his season is in question as Penske has funding for only two cars for the season. “I think it was a good result,” said Power. “I could see the win there within our reach. That certainly would have made my situation easier. I can only hope this result will help me in the future.” For Wheldon, it was the best he could have hoped for. “I’m incredibly excited,” said Wheldon after hoping from his race car, his first 500 start John Barnes and Panther Racing. “Unfortunately we didn’t have quite enough for Helio (Castroneves) and the whole Penske organization. I have to say, there’s not many races that I’ve done in my career where I can honestly say that the team executed 100 percent and they did so today. They made my job so easy today and I can only look to the future with this team.” Also praising her team was Patrick. Vocal in the past about poor performances from her crew today she credited them with her best ever 500 finish even after being the first female driver to lead the 500, that coming in 2005. “I am really pleased with today’s effort,” said Patrick. “Those last two pits stops put me in contention and that’s all a driver can ask for. I had a good car all day and they made it better at the end. They gave me the track position but I just did not have enough down force at the end to get by Dan (Wheldon). I got alongside him and that was it. I knew then we had about the same and I just hooked up with him in hopes of catching Helio (Castroneves) but that was not to be today. I felt the track got better for us today and we did a great job in keeping up with it and that helped us to a third. Bell’s fifth place finish was a surprise to everyone but him and his KV Racing team. After storming through the field at the start moving from 24 to 11 in the first 30 laps he fell back due to a poor pit stop but came right back to claim his top five finish. “We said all month long we wanted to take it one step at a time, and we did that,” said Bell, who had only two previous Indy 500 starts and the fifth today was by far his best. “Jimmy (Vasser) and Kevin (Kalkhoven) put their faith in me and gave me the best car I ever had had. I am so happy to finish in the top five for them.” Alex Tagliani was the highest finishing rookie in the field, finishing 11th after starting shotgun (33rd) on the field as a record 19 cars finished on the lead lap. The previous record was 16 back in 1959. Today’s race had only six lead changes, which is the fewest number of leads changes for a race going the full 500 mile distance since 1965. The record is one for the 1930 race. The three female drivers in the race completed 599 laps out of a possible 600 with Patrick and Sarah Fisher completing all 200 laps and Milka Duno finishing one lap off the pace. Fisher was all smiles after the race. Her 17th place finish was her best in 8 starts and it is with her own team. After crashing out of last year’s race with Kanaan and leaving the track in tears with a wrecked car she returned to Indy this with a solid sponsor and a stronger team. “It went OK,” said Fisher. It was a tough day and difficult to pass but the car is in one piece and we have a better schedule this year than last. That is progress and I’m excited about that.” The closeness of today’s Indy car racing is brought about by the same chassis, Dallara; the same engine, Honda and the same tire, Firestone. The difference is in teams and strategy. No one in Indy car racing today is better than Penske at Indy. He lives for the 500 and his effort is placed on the race. That was evident today as it has been for the past nine years, winning five of his fifteen during this new age of Indy car racing. He understands that seconds make the difference with the equal package available to all and he knows how to find those seconds and how to them work for him. The crowd seemed down for the race today as empty seats were readily seen, but considering the economic times we deal with today I thought it was a good crowd as the speedway will never announce the actual attendance figure. At the close of the day it was announced that Meira suffered broken vertebra and will be hospitalized for a few days as treatment is determined.*EOS

May 24th 2009 - Written by: Steve BurzynskiI typically tell my stories visually through the camera lens, but I have such a new respect and appreciation for Helio Castoneves, this year’s winner of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, that I just can’t keep silent.I first saw Helio at the track the second weekend of qualifying and immediately said to myself, “this looks like a guy who has been through a struggle.” Of course he was his ever-friendly, jovial and smiley self, but it was obvious he had lost a fair amount of weight and you could see how the last year had effected him.I don’t want to make this a political article, but suffice it to say, I was so overjoyed and relieved when Helio came out of the IRS “lynching” free and clear of any wrong doing.I use the term “lynching” because that is exactly what it was. They have the power to ruin people’s lives and reputations, even when they are 100% innocent. It angered me to see so much of the main-stream media jump right on the “lynch-train” and write negative and scarring articles. Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? It just doesn’t exist, especially with the class-warfare our main-stream media has created. It’s gotten to the point where if someone makes millions of dollars and the IRS brings a charge against them, then they are automatically guilty. What a pitiful state we are in when the main-stream media fuels such envy and jealousy toward people who have risen to the top of their game, sacrificed everything (literally everything) and shine like the sun.We should be praising people like Helio. Not only for this great victory today at the Indy 500, but also because of what he has accomplished in life. After today’s race I was able to shake Helio’s hand and congratulate him on a great victory. In my mind, I was congratulating him for much more than today’s win at the 2009 Indy 500.EOS :: continue »

October 29th 2007 - 21-OCT-2007 - SCNA TESTS AT SEBRING We tested F1000 chassis 019 at Sebring Raceway. It was the first time a Stohr F1000 was on the 3.7-mile, 12-hour endurance course. With its challenging turns and rough surface, it's a great place to shake down a car. Doug Smith, Jr. was the test driver. After using the first session for systems check, Doug let loose in the second session, turning high 2:10s with old tires! We believe a 2:08 is possible. For the weekend, Bill Wald took over the driving duties, trying the Stohr for the first time after four years in a Van Diemen FC. Bill kept his nose clean, knowing we needed a complete car for the upcoming ARRC. He finished well in both the 20- and 30-minute races, turning the second fastest race lap. It is painted Lotus Chrome Orange. :: continue »
